I'm Planning A DIY Composting Toilet -- But There Are Still Cleaning Issues!

My name is Lenny and I currently live in a 30’ Xplorer 320 motorhome while I’m setting up two mini-mobile homes on my suburban property.  I have been in my current RV as a tiny home while I started back to school in 2014.

I started setting up some solar energy using a Harbor Freight 100-watt system and as prices came down and I came across great deals, I expanded my off-grid solar system to over 1,000 watts, three 100Ah LiFePO4 batteries, and two 100Ah AGM batteries.

In the coming months and years, I plan to travel around with my newly adopted/rescued dog, Buddy (his video coming soon!), in my 2006 Dodge Ram 2500 HD pickup truck (lifted, 4WD, V8 Cummins Turbo Diesel), while living on the road in a 32’ Hideout Toy Hauler RV.  I will keep my mini-mobile home and rent the other one so I’ll have a home base to come back to regularly. Maybe, I'll have a roomie living in mine so it’s not vacant while I’m on the road and have someone to take care of my property and any minor handyman fixes that might be needed.

Buddy started showing up on my property in recent weeks, sometimes, in the middle of the night, eating the food I would put out every night for the local vermin (raccoons, opossums, feral cats). Eventually, he started showing up in the morning and I would put out more food for him and he quit being afraid and became my “Buddy.”

Today’s video features something from my To-Build list, but also something I've been dealing with the past several years, "cleaning my pee jugs."

I use Arizona Ice Tea gallon jugs as my pee jugs, and many other full-time RV'ers and especially those in the smaller rigs like vans and truck campers do as well. They are much sturdier than milk jugs and have a bigger opening too! While new jugs of AZ Ice Tea are cheap enough, if you have an actual manufactured composting toilet, then you need to clean your jug since they can't be replaced for $2.50.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9JMp49KtNSg (not great but some ideas)

Composting Toilets cost over $600 to over $1,000.  Here's my Amazon store link for a few models.  https://amzn.to/310coUm  Sun-Mar and Nature's Head are two that I see in other videos and blogs.

This one looks similar to the DIY composting toilet in the first Youtube link above.  I can't find a similar model for sale on Amazon but here's one on eBay for $278.00 if you don't want to build one yourself.  https://www.ebay.com/itm/Sawdust-Composting-Toilet-with-Urine-Diverter-Cedar-Tongue-and-Groove-/352710192395

I don't see the Urine Diverter on Amazon either but they are also listed on eBay for $35.00. https://www.ebay.com/itm/DIY-Composting-Toilet-Urine-Diverter-In-Bucket-Model-w-out-Vent-Attachment-/163140738408

Here is another Urine Diverter that costs $61.50 but comes with additional hardware.  https://www.ebay.com/itm/SmartFlow-URINE-DIVERTER-Separator-for-Dry-Composting-Toilet-DIY-Humanure-Jon/173983863226

Several blogs and videos that I've read and watched mentioned a book called The Humanure Handbook, which goes along with the concept of composting human waste. Of course, most of the time, the composting toilet will simply go into a garbage bag and into a trash dumpster.  https://amzn.to/2MwFW6R

I had seen these types of mini-washing machines online before but was going to hold off on getting one until I was actually ready to hit the road and do some traveling, but I was blessed to be given a used one by a neighbor. It needs to be cleaned up as it was sitting in his carport for quite a while. I went ahead and did a test run with too much detergent (these only need a small amount) and bleach and that cleaned the washtub and mostly cleaned the spin tub.

According to the tag on the back and the owner’s manual, it uses 300 watts on the wash cycle and 120 watts on the spin cycle, both at 120 volts, so it should run fine off of most solar systems.

Introducing Big Blue, my tow vehicle, and my Toy Hauler RV Travel Trailer. Oh yeah, Buddy, my potential new pet puppy makes a guest appearance also.

Big Blue is a 2006 Dodge Ram 2500 Quad Cab, 8' bed with a camper shell. She has a Cummins Turbo Diesel, 4 x 4 Heavy Duty lifted truck. She will be a beast once I have finished working on her.

The Toy Hauler RV Travel Trailer is also a work in progress. I got both of these last year and I have been slowly working on them in between all of the other things going on.
